What BioCircular farming actually means on our farm

“Sustainable” is a word that has been asked to carry too much. So here is ours, spelled out as four specific things rather than a claim.

BioCircular is how our farm is built: a closed loop where energy, water, nutrition and natural resources feed back into each other instead of leaving as waste.

Renewable energy

Solar power supports the farm’s energy use. The barns, the packing room and the growing beds all draw from it.

Water stewardship

We capture and reclaim water rather than drawing fresh for every use. In Florida, where water is a live political question, that is not a small thing.

Natural fertiliser

Hen manure is the biggest single by-product of an egg farm, and on most farms it is a disposal cost. We turn ours into 100% organic fertiliser pellets. The waste line becomes a product line.

Integrated nutrition

Egg wash water would normally go down a drain. Ours feeds hydroponic growing beds. What grows in those beds — marigolds and leafy greens — goes back into the hens’ diet, which is where our deep orange yolk colour comes from. That is the loop closing on itself in the most literal way we have.

Why it is worth doing

Every part of the farm is connected, which makes the whole thing more efficient than the sum of its parts. It also means that when a buyer asks what our sustainability story is, we can point at four mechanisms instead of an adjective.
