Cage-free vs Certified Humane: what the labels on an egg box actually mean
Roughly three in four shoppers say there are so many food certifications that they have lost track of what they stand for. Buyers are not far behind. Here is the short version of the ones you will see on an egg case, and what sits behind each.
Cage-free
Cage-free means the hens are not confined to a battery cage and can move around the building they are housed in. That is the whole claim. It does not specify how much space each hen gets, it does not guarantee any access to the outdoors, and no inspector is required to visit and check. It is a real improvement over a cage. It is also the floor, not the ceiling.
Certified Humane
Certified Humane is a label awarded by Humane Farm Animal Care, an independent non-profit. It sets published welfare standards, and third-party inspectors — veterinarians and animal-welfare scientists — visit farms to confirm those standards are being met. The distinction that matters is that somebody outside the company checks.
Morning Star Fields is Certified Humane (Raised & Handled).
UEP Certified Cage-Free
A United Egg Producers programme with its own audited cage-free standard. Holding it alongside Certified Humane means two separate schemes have looked at the same barns.
Prop 12
California’s Proposition 12 sets minimum space requirements for laying hens and restricts the sale of eggs that do not meet them. Prop 12 compliant means a farm meets that space standard, which is useful shorthand even outside California.
SQF
Safe Quality Food is a food-safety certification rather than a welfare one. It is the scheme most retail and foodservice buyers already audit their suppliers against, which is why it often settles the compliance question in one line.
The question worth asking
Whichever labels are on the box, one question separates a supplier who can answer from one who cannot: which farm did this case come from, and what day were the eggs laid? An aggregator consolidating from many producers usually cannot say. A single farm can.
